How to crochet a Dragonfly: A Step-by-Step GuideCrocheting is a fun and relaxing hobby that allows you to create beautiful and unique pieces. One fun and versatile crochet project is the dragonfly. With just a few basic stitches, you can create a lovely dragonfly to use as a decorative accent or to embellish other projects. In this tutorial, we'll go over how to crochet a dragonfly step-by-step. Let's get started!Materials Needed,• Quilters sewing thread (I used size #50)
• Small gauge wire (24 or less)
• 1 mm size hook
• Scissors or wire cutters
• Sewing needle
• Picture of dragonfly if wanted
• Needle‐nose pliers if wanted Wings
• Use a reference picture, use a longer piece of wire and bend two longer teardrop shapes, two shorter teardrop shapes, and a body with a thicker short head. This might take some practice but starting with the wings helped.
• The longer set will be top and shorter on bottom, both can have the same pattern inside or you can change it up to each.
• Tie on thread at small end and sc around wire (pushing stitches together) until you fully cover the wing wire.
• Fill in wing with any stitch, I used a simple (1sc, 1ch) repeated on the long sides catching the end stitches when they met.
o Start on bottom of wing, 1sc, (1ch, 1sc in 3rd or 4th st) *repeat to end of wing, slst up end to line up with next row, turn
o (1sc in ch of row below, 1ch)*repeat to point, slst to row above and flip around
o repeat first two rows on top of wingo for larger wing repeat once more on bottom again but st together last row to other row, for smaller wing just st together rows
• Repeat for all wings. Body
• Magic circle‐ 6sc; row 2: 2sc in each st (make sure that your body wire can fit inside, add more sc if needed)
• Sc in each previous sc (spiral) until you cover wire lengthwise to the wing area
• In rows, row 1: sc in 6 st; row 2: sc in 3st, 2sc in st, sc in 2 st; row 3& 4: sc in each st (if this doesn’t reach just past the top of the wing area add more rows)Head
• Magic circle‐ 8sc; row 2: 2sc in each st; row 3: [sc in 3 st, 2sc in st] repeat 4x (make sure that your head wire can fit inside, add more sc if needed)
• Sc in each previous sc (spiral) until you cover wire lengthwise to the wing area
• In rows, row 1: sc in 14 st; row 2: sc in 6st, 2decsc, sc in 6 st; row 3: 2decsc, sc in 9st, 2decsc; row 4:
sc in 5st, 2decsc; sc in 4st; row 5: 2decsc, sc in 6st, 2decsc; (if this doesn’t reach just past the bottom of the wing area to the body, add more rows)
Putting together
• Sew head and body together and to wings, both front and back, you shouldn’t see any wire showing.
• Add any details you like, such as eyes or legs
• Note that this is NOT meant for children’s toys with the wire, but can be used for mobiles or applications. Step 4: Finishing TouchesUse your tapestry needle to weave in any loose ends and shape the wings and body of the dragonfly. You can also use fabric glue to add small gems or other embellishments to the wings or body.Crocheting a dragonfly is a fun and simple project that can be customized in many ways. You can use different colors and yarns to create different effects, or experiment with adding different embellishments to your dragonfly. With a little creativity, you can create a unique and beautiful dragonfly that's all.You can also check out a different version from the training video below.
