How to crochet Granny Square

Materials needed:

  • Crochet hook (size H or I is recommended)
  • Worsted weight yarn in desired colors
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle
Step 1: Make a slip knot and chain 4 stitches.

Step 2: Slip stitch into the first chain to create a loop.

Step 3: Chain 3 stitches (counts as your first double crochet) and work 2 more double crochet stitches into the loop.

Step 4: Chain 2 stitches, then work 3 double crochet stitches into the loop.

Step 5: Repeat step 4 twice more to create a total of four groups of 3 double crochet stitches separated by 2 chain stitches.

Step 6: Slip stitch into the top of the beginning chain 3 to join.

Step 7: Change to a new color of yarn (if desired) by tying a knot and pulling the new color through the loop.

Step 8: Chain 3 stitches and work 2 double crochet stitches into the corner chain space.

Step 9: Chain 2 stitches and work 3 double crochet stitches into the same corner chain space.

Step 10: Work 3 double crochet stitches into the next chain space, then chain 1 stitch.

Step 11: Repeat step 10 in each chain space around, working 3 double crochet stitches, chain 2 stitches, and 3 double crochet stitches into each corner chain space.

Step 12: Slip stitch into the top of the beginning chain 3 to join.

Step 13: Change to a new color of yarn (if desired) and repeat steps 8-12 until your granny square is the desired size.

Step 14: To finish, tie off your yarn and weave in the ends with a yarn needle.
