How to Knit Zigzag Pattern Mother Cardigan: A Step-by-Step Guide

Knitting is a great way to create something special and unique for yourself or your loved ones. If you're looking for a new project, why not try knitting a zigzag pattern mother cardigan? Here's a step-by-step guide to help you get started.

Materials

  • 4 skeins of soft worsted weight yarn (in the color of your choice)
  • Two knitting needles (appropriate size for your yarn)
  • Stitch markers
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle
  • Buttons (optional)

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Cast On

Cast on 118 stitches onto your knitting needles.

Step 2: Ribbing

Knit the first 3 stitches, then purl the next 3 stitches. Repeat this pattern (knit 3, purl 3) until the end of the row.

Continue this pattern for 6 rows in total.

Step 3: Begin Zigzag Pattern

Here's how to read the chart:

  • Each square represents a stitch
  • A blank square means you knit the stitch
  • A square with a dot means you purl the stitch
  • The arrows indicate the direction in which you should read the chart
Continue knitting in the zigzag pattern until the piece measures 19 inches from the cast on edge.

Step 4: Divide for Sleeves and Body

Place a stitch marker after the 28th stitch, and again after the 90th stitch. These markers will indicate where the sleeves will begin.

Knit to the first stitch marker, slip the next 34 stitches onto a stitch holder or scrap yarn, knit to the second stitch marker, slip the next 34 stitches onto a stitch holder or scrap yarn, and knit to the end of the row.

Step 5: Body

Continue knitting in the zigzag pattern on the remaining 50 stitches for 11 more inches, or until the piece measures 30 inches from the cast on edge.

Step 6: Sleeves

Transfer the 34 stitches from the stitch holder or scrap yarn onto your knitting needle.

Pick up and knit 10 stitches along the underarm section.

Knit in the zigzag pattern on these 44 stitches for 8 inches, or until the sleeve measures 12 inches from the underarm section.

Bind off the stitches, and repeat this process on the other sleeve.

Step 7: Finishing Touches

Sew in any loose ends using a tapestry needle.

If desired, sew buttons onto the front of the cardigan.

And there you have it - a beautiful zigzag pattern mother cardigan!

This cardigan is perfect for keeping you warm and stylish during those colder months. The zigzag pattern adds a unique touch to the design, making it stand out from other knitwear.

With just a few materials and some knitting skills, you can create a special piece that you'll cherish for years to come.

Happy knitting!
