Materials

  • 3-4 skeins of DK weight yarn in different colors
  • Size US 6 circular knitting needles
  • Stitch markers
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors

Pattern

Follow these steps to create the mixed color embossed tulips pattern:

  1. Cast on 94 stitches and join in the round.
  2. Knit 8 rounds of K2, P2 ribbing.
  3. Knit 2 rounds in stockinette stitch.
  4. Start knitting the embossed tulips pattern as follows:
    • Round 1: *Knit 4, purl 2. Repeat from * to end of round.
    • Round 2: *Knit 4, slip 1 stitch onto cable needle and hold in back, knit 2, knit 1 from cable needle, purl 2. Repeat from * to end of round.
    • Round 3: *Knit 4, purl 2. Repeat from * to end of round.
    • Round 4: *Knit 2 in Color A, knit 2 in Color B, slip 1 stitch onto cable needle and hold in front, knit 2 in Color B, knit 1 from cable needle, knit 2 in Color A, purl 2. Repeat from * to end of round.
    • Round 5: *Knit 4, purl 2. Repeat from * to end of round.
    • Round 6: *Knit 2 in Color B, knit 2 in Color A, slip 1 stitch onto cable needle and hold in front, knit 2 in Color A, knit 1 from cable needle, knit 2 in Color B, purl 2. Repeat from * to end of round.
    • Repeat rounds 1-6, changing colors every two rounds, until the vest measures 7 inches from the cast on edge.
  5. Continue knitting in stockinette stitch, using only Color A, until the vest measures 10 inches from the cast on edge.
  6. Begin shaping the armholes by binding off 5 stitches at the beginning of the next two rounds.
  7. Knit in stockinette stitch for 2 more inches.
  8. Bind off all stitches.

Finishing

Once you've finished knitting the vest, use a tapestry needle to weave in any loose ends. You can also block the vest by wetting it and laying it flat to dry, this will give it a nice and even shape.
