How to Knit Wheat Ear Model Baby Vest

Materials:

  • Worsted weight yarn in your desired color
  • Knitting needles in size US 7
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle
  • Stitch markers (optional)
  • Buttons or snaps for closure (optional)

Instructions:

Back Panel:

Using the long-tail cast on method, cast on 56 stitches.

Row 1 (RS): *K2, p2; repeat from * to last 2 stitches, k2.

Row 2 (WS): *P2, k2; repeat from * to last 2 stitches, p2.

Repeat these 2 rows for a total of 4 times.

Next, we will start the wheat ear pattern:

  • Row 1 (RS): K2, *slip 2 stitches as if to knit, k1, pass 2 slipped stitches over the knit stitch, k3; repeat from * to last 4 stitches, slip 2 stitches as if to knit, k1, pass 2 slipped stitches over the knit stitch, k1.
  • Row 2 (WS): Purl all stitches.
  • Row 3 (RS): K1, *slip 2 stitches as if to knit, k1, pass 2 slipped stitches over the knit stitch, k3; repeat from * to last 3 stitches, slip 2 stitches as if to knit, k1, pass 2 slipped stitches over the knit stitch.
  • Row 4 (WS): Purl all stitches.
  • Row 5 (RS): K2, *k1, slip 2 stitches as if to knit, pass the first slipped stitch over the second, k3; repeat from * to last 4 stitches, k1, slip 2 stitches as if to knit, pass the first slipped stitch over the second, k1.
  • Row 6 (WS): Purl all stitches.
  • Row 7 (RS): K1, *k1, slip 2 stitches as if to knit, pass the first slipped stitch over the second, k3; repeat from * to last 3 stitches, k1, slip 2 stitches as if to knit, pass the first slipped stitch over the second.
  • Row 8 (WS): Purl all stitches.
Repeat these 8 rows for a total of 16 times, or until the back panel measures 9 inches.

Shoulder Seams:

Place the back panel aside, and let's work on the shoulder seams.

Transfer the last 14 stitches from the left needle onto a stitch holder or a piece of scrap yarn.

Slip the first 14 stitches from the right needle onto a stitch holder or a piece of scrap.
