Materials:
- Worsted weight yarn (about 200-300 yards)
- Size 7 (4.5mm) knitting needles
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle
- Cast on 36 stitches. Divide the stitches onto two needles, with 18 stitches on each needle.
- Knit 2, purl 2 ribbing for 2 inches (5 cm).
- Knit in stockinette stitch (knit every round) until the sock measures about 5 inches (12.5 cm) from the cast-on edge.
- Begin shaping the heel:
- Row 1: Knit 14, knit 2 together, turn work.
- Row 2: Slip 1 purlwise, purl 6, purl 2 together, turn work.
- Row 3: Slip 1 purlwise, knit 6, knit 2 together, turn work.
- Repeat rows 2 and 3 until you have 18 stitches remaining on the heel.
- Pick up and knit 9 stitches along the side of the heel. Knit across the 18 stitches that were left unworked. Pick up and knit 9 stitches along the other side of the heel. Place a marker to indicate the beginning of the round.
- Knit in the round until the sock measures about 2 inches (5 cm) from the bottom of the heel.
- Begin shaping the toe:
- Round 1: Knit 1, knit 2 together, knit to 3 stitches before the marker, knit 2 together, knit 1, slip marker, knit 1, knit 2 together, knit to 3 stitches before the end of the round, knit 2 together, knit 1.
- Round 2: Knit all stitches.
- Repeat rounds 1 and 2 until you have 8 stitches remaining (4 stitches on each needle).
- Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread the tail onto a tapestry needle and pull it through the remaining 8 stitches. Pull tight to close the toe and weave in the end.
- Repeat the pattern to make the second sock.
