Season both sides of steak with the remaining salt and black pepper.
Divide onions evenly among the centers of the foil sheets.
Place 1 steak portion on top of each onion bed.
Fold each foil sheet tightly into a sealed packet.
Place foil packets on a baking sheet in a single layer.
Bake for 20–25 minutes, depending on desired doneness and steak thickness.
Let packets rest for 5 minutes before opening.
Carefully open packets and spoon the onions and juices over each steak.
Serve warm.
