Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the elbow macaroni and cook 1–2 minutes less than package directions until barely al dente. Drain thoroughly.
Return the drained macaroni to the pot. Add the beef chili and 1 cup of the shredded cheddar. Stir until evenly combined and slightly saucy.
Transfer the mixture to the baking dish and spread into an even layer, pressing lightly into the corners.
Sprinkle the remaining ½ cup cheddar evenly over the surface.
Bake uncovered for 25 minutes until heated through and bubbling at the edges.
Remove from the oven and let rest for 10 minutes before serving.
