Place the peeled whole sweet potatoes in a single snug layer in a 5- to 6-quart slow cooker.
Sprinkle the brown sugar evenly over the sweet potatoes.
Dot the butter pieces evenly over the top.
Cover and cook on LOW for 5 to 6 hours, or on HIGH for 2 ½ to 3 hours, until the sweet potatoes are very tender.
Spoon the syrup from the bottom of the slow cooker over the sweet potatoes.
Let sit on WARM for 10 to 15 minutes.
Serve whole or sliced with the warm syrup spooned over each portion.
